The Tyson Spill
On June 6, hundreds of thousands of gallons of organic waste was spilled into Dave Young Creek, a tributary of the Mulberry Fork, by Tyson’s River Valley Ingredients Plant in Hanceville, Alabama. Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources estimated the fish killed to be 175,000, conservatively. This has had a devastating effect on several communities near the river. Tyson’s record of environmental responsibility is lacking, as evidenced by the many communities across the nation that are facing similar circumstances. The Sipsey Heritage Commission is committed to keeping our community informed about the status of our rivers. We want to make our friends aware of the brand names owned by Tyson.
